Fort Edward is a village rich with historical and recreational sites. During the French and Indian war, it was one of the largest British military forts in the colonies.
It was also a strategically located position on the military trail during
the Revolutionary War. Today there is a host of historical sites you can visit, as well as places for those looking for recreation.

Archaeological Lab Special Events Encampments Fort Edward Historical Association Director: Paul McCarty 29-31 Broadway Fort Edward NY 12828 518-747-9600 The Old Fort House Museum The building was constructed in 1772 as a private residence for Patrick Smyth and is one of the oldest frame structures in upstate NY. This building is the focal point of the campus which includes five additional buildings- all of which are open for tours. As the name indicates, the home was built from timbers that were taken from the ruins of the fortifications of Fort Edward. The house was used as headquarters for both British and American Generals in the Revolutionary War. In July, 1783 General George Washington and his party dined at the house on two different occasions. Guided tour includes: -the Old Fort House itself with authentic furnishings. -an 1840's Plank Road Tollhouse -an 1853 law office -The Riverside Schoolhouse, a one room schoolhouse. -The Chronkite Pavilion -the Village of Fort Edward Water Works Barn exhibit Fort Edward Historical Association -the Old Fort House Museum & Campus Open daily during the summer General George Washington really did sleep here! The campus includes an 1800's law office, an early 1900's school house and a gift shop. Open daily; nominal charge and worth the trip! Annual Auction & Flea Market on the third weekend in July. The Washington County Historical Society Built around 1815, it is one of the original homes in Fort Edward. There are various programs, lectures and tours throughout the summer.
